Introduction of semester format of study pattern in the general courses by Calcutta University is a welcome change. Previously in the Honors study programs of 3 years, 2 sets of examinations were held. In Part I, apart from the Honors papers, candidates had to appear for their Pass subjects also. While in Part II students needed only to appear for their Honors papers.
Presently, this 3-year program in divided into Part I, Part II, and Part III, the examinations being held at the end of each academic session. There are a number of advantages of this new format of studies. At the outset it is an attempt towards initiation of semester system as in technological and professional institutions.
It is a stepping stone for setting up a universal study pattern across India. The entire course now being broken down to three parts might be broken down further for convenience of students and teachers simultaneously.
Study lessons being restrictive in one part, students not only find it more convenient to have better understanding of a subject, but also get more study hours at his disposal. With tougher competition all around, it allows the students to pursue short term parallel courses concurrently.
Study of foreign language is a popular subject among many students, while some students attend classes in performing or creative arts. The emergence of training institutes and workshops in fine arts testify this.
