Mumbai: The management of Chinai College and MVLU College has refused to participate in the online admission process, and has informed the education department that they have shut down their institutes.
This, despite the fact that the Bombay High Court ordered Laxmi Education Society - which runs the 2 colleges - to provide the state will the required information so that it could be uploaded on the state's online admission website.
On June 1, the management wrote to the education department stating that no information will be parted with as the colleges will be closed down, said Amar Singh, president of Mumbai junior colleges' teachers' association.
In June 2007, the Laxmi Education Society informed students of its decision to close down the institutions by October. Following this, petitions had been filed by teachers and a social worker, opposing it. The government, too, has challenged the decision and alleged that the management was planning to open a mall instead.
In July 2008, the Higher Court set aside an order passed by the state school tribunal that had allowed a college's management to shut down its institution. On May 5, the High Court ordered the management to cooperate with the state and provide all information for this year's admission process. However, the information has not been provided till date, said Singh.
This is contempt of court. The state must take up this issue, otherwise the management will not admit any students this year and close shop, Singh added.
The management was not obtainable for comment.
